No one could deny the importance of English in our society.we see English words everywhere, on internet, at magazines, on TV and even on streets. However, some students do not feel that learning English is ifun. So, how could we change our students minds?
Many authors have come to the agreement that emotional factors are crucial to generate motivation in students. Accordingly, we should care about what they feel in class and work on the teacher-student relationship. If we are nice, we use humor, and we talk to them, in statead of yelling at them or threating them, we are giving the first step.
The second step is making the lesson attractive. According to Jeremy Harmer motivation is the key. However, motivating students is not an easy task. It is my view thet we, teachers, should based our lessons accordig to our students tastes, concerns and the things they enjoy to do. The more students feel enjoyment, the more they motivate and learn. For example, if they like music, prepare activities with videos and songs, if they are keen on art, prepare a class to discuss about it, etc. Many teachers generate boredom in their classes because they waste too much giving grammar explanations, or collapse students minds with long list of boring activities and vocabulary. A teacher should wonder if his students are enjoying the lesson or not. I think we should try on more games, or funny activities, known as warm- ups.
Finally, we should involve our students in the class, they do not have to be sit as they were frozen, they need to participate, we have to allow them to participate to make them feel involved. We need to be worried of the teacher speaking time, if you are speaking more than de 30% of the lesson, you are doing a lecture and that is not a participative students -center class.
